Management of Obesity & Health Literacy in General Practice
Obesity is a major contributor to burden of disease and occurs in 28% of primary care patients in Australia. Patient knowledge and skills are sorely tested by the complexities of diet and physical activity information; 59% of Australians have low health literacy, compromising their ability to change lifestyle and effectively use primary care services.
Obese patients with low health literacy suffer stigma and are often assumed by health providers to have low motivation. This is detrimental to their seeking or receiving support to manage their weight.
