Exploring the GP Nurse's Role in Delivering Primary Mental Health Care - Dr Susan McInnes
A presentation by Dr Sue McInnes: Exploring the General Practice Nurse's Role in Delivering Primary Mental Health Care.
More people are presenting mental health conditions to general practices than ever before. While general practice nurses are ideally located to intervene, previous research has indicated lower levels of involvement in mental health than other areas of chronic disease.
This paper reports a national study to develop a mental health scope of practice for general practice nurses.
Understanding the issues that impact the nurse's role in regard to primary mental health care will be used to develop a scope of practice so that general practice nurses are able to provide immediate and appropriate support to individuals with a mental health condition.
